Analytics for small businesses: metrics that matter.
No need for complex dashboards or expensive tools. Free Google Analytics and Search Console already deliver the data that determines whether your site is improving or stalling.
Small businesses often install analytics and never look at them. Not because they don't want to — because they don't know what to look for. This article lists the metrics that actually matter and how to interpret them without being a data analyst.
Free tools you already have
- Google Analytics 4 (GA4): shows where visitors come from, what they do on the site, and where they drop off.
- Google Search Console: shows which terms your site appears for on Google, how many clicks it receives, and the average position.
Both are free. Both take 10 minutes to set up. Neither requires advanced coding.
4 metrics that really matter
- Organic impressions (Search Console): how many times your site appeared in Google results. If this number isn't growing, SEO isn't working.
- Organic clicks (Search Console): how many people clicked on the site after seeing the result. If impressions are growing but clicks are falling, the page may be appearing for the wrong terms.
- Bounce rate and engagement (GA4): if a visitor enters and leaves without interacting, the content doesn't match the search. If they browse more than one page, the site is delivering on its promise.
- Conversions (GA4): define a conversion — form submission, WhatsApp click, phone call. Without a defined conversion, you don't know if the site is working.
What to ignore in the first 30 days
- Single-day spikes: a day of high traffic could be a viral post, an ad, or an error. Look at the 30-day trend, not the day.
- Absolute bounce rate: contact pages have high bounce rates and that's normal. What matters is the trend over time.
- Real-time data: GA4 has a real-time view that's fun, but it's not useful for decisions. Use the consolidated reports.
How to use data to make decisions
The rule is simple: data → hypothesis → adjustment → new measurement. If Search Console shows your site appears for "stock control consultancy" but not for "stock control consultancy in Piracicaba", the hypothesis is that a page per region is missing. The adjustment is creating that page. The new measurement confirms or refutes it.
If visitors enter through the homepage and leave without clicking anything, the hypothesis is that the CTA isn't visible or isn't clear. The adjustment is changing the button text and position.
