Why your ChatGPT answers are generic
Ever noticed how ChatGPT gives your coworker much better answers than it gives you? That's not a coincidence. There's a pattern behind it — and it's simpler than you think.
The mistake everyone makes
When you open ChatGPT and type "help me write an email to a client", the AI doesn't have enough information. It doesn't know who the client is, what the context is, or what you've already discussed.
Without context, the AI guesses. And its guess is, by definition, generic — it fits anyone, but it doesn't fit you.
The new employee metaphor
Imagine hiring someone and on their first day saying only: "write a report." They'll look at you and ask: "What report? For whom? With what data?"
AI is the same. If you don't provide context, role, and mission, it delivers the bare minimum.
Now imagine saying: "You are a financial analyst. Write a Q3 spending report for the board. Use the data I'll paste below. Focus on three areas: highest costs, where to cut, and next quarter projections."
Same tool. Completely different answer.
The 3 missing ingredients
Whenever the answer feels generic, one of these is missing:
- Identity — who should the AI be? (e.g. "You are a senior product manager")
- Context — what's the real situation? (e.g. "We're launching a B2B HR app")
- Clear mission — what exactly to deliver? (e.g. "List the top 3 risks of this launch")
Before and after, in one sentence
Before: "Give me content ideas."
After: "You are a blog writer for an HR startup. Our audience is people managers. Give me 5 article ideas about talent retention, each with a title and three bullet points."
The gap between those two prompts is the gap between generic output and reliable working tool.
What to do in your next conversation
Before pressing Enter, stop and ask: "does the AI have enough information to answer something useful for MY situation?"
If the answer is no, add identity, context, and mission. Within a week, it becomes a habit.
