Paste the contract into ChatGPT and ask: "Identify abusive or ambiguous clauses in this contract. For each one, suggest a more balanced alternative wording."
AI doesn't replace a lawyer's judgment. But it scans text far faster than a human and flags where the risk is.
Guided case law research
"List recent rulings on [topic]. Organize by: favorable holdings, unfavorable holdings, and minority opinions."
Caution: use the anchor method. Ask the AI to cite case numbers. Then verify each one in the official database.
Drafting briefs with structure
Use the Perfect Prompt Formula, adapted:
"You are an attorney specializing in [area]. Draft an initial pleading for [case]. Context: [2 sentences about the client and situation]. Applicable doctrine: [cite]. Case law: [cite]. Structure: facts, legal arguments, prayer for relief. Technical tone, no adjectives."
Case risk analysis
"Analyze this case from three angles: likelihood of success, procedural risks, and estimated value. Justify each point based on what was reported."
The extra caution for Law
Unlike other professions, a factual error from ChatGPT in the legal field has serious consequences. Three golden rules:
- Always anchor in real documents (contract, statute, case law)
- Always verify case numbers and legal citations
- Never outsource the final decision — AI suggests, you decide
